The short answer
A heat pump is a strong fit for many Alhambra homes because winters are mild and one system covers both heating and cooling. We size it from a load calculation, check ducts and electrical capacity, and confirm rebates with the utility that serves your address; the federal 25C credit no longer applies to new installs.
For a lot of Alhambra households, the old arrangement of a gas furnace for winter plus a separate air conditioner for summer is up for review. Both pieces of equipment tend to age out around the same time, winters here are mild enough that a heat pump handles them comfortably, and regional air rules are steadily tightening on gas furnaces. A heat pump does both jobs with one outdoor unit, moving heat out of the house in July and back into it in January. SummitAir HVAC Contractors installs ducted and ductless heat pumps across 91801 and 91803, a short drive south from our Pasadena base. Here is how we decide whether a heat pump fits your house, what the project usually includes, and the rebate and tax-credit facts that are current right now.
Why the valley climate suits heat pumps
Los Angeles has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and mild winters. Heat pumps are most efficient when outdoor temperatures are moderate, and Alhambra spends most of its heating season in exactly that range. On the cooling side, a heat pump is an air conditioner in every practical sense, so summer performance in an inland valley is the main sizing concern.
That combination means the system is sized primarily for hot afternoons, and then we confirm it will carry the house comfortably on the coldest mornings of the year. In most homes here it does so without needing a backup gas furnace.
Ducted, ductless or a mix
Which style of heat pump makes sense depends largely on what the house already has.
We often combine approaches. A ducted system can serve the original part of the home while a single ductless head handles a converted garage or an addition that was never tied into the ducts.
- Homes with existing ducts in decent shape: a ducted heat pump with a new air handler usually replaces the furnace and AC coil in the same spot
- Homes with wall or floor heaters and no ducts: ductless mini-split heads give room-by-room control without opening ceilings
- Homes with ducts that are undersized or failing: we price duct repair alongside the equipment so you can compare honestly
- Condos or units with limited outdoor space: compact outdoor units and careful line-set routing are the main planning points
What the project includes
Replacing a furnace and AC with a heat pump is more than an equipment swap. The gas line to the old furnace is capped. The indoor unit becomes an electric air handler, which needs its own properly sized circuit. Many older Alhambra houses have electrical panels that need evaluating, and in some cases an upgrade, before a heat pump and air handler can be added.
We also review the thermostat, because heat pumps work best with controls designed for them, and we plan the condensate drain, which runs in both heating and cooling seasons. Permits for the mechanical and electrical work are pulled as required, and the job is inspected before it is closed out.
Rebates, credits and furnace rules
Rebates depend on which utility serves the address. LADWP residential customers can apply for Consumer Rebate Program rebates on qualifying heat pump systems, with the amount tied to the unit's SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings and the application filed within 12 months of purchase. Many homes outside the City of Los Angeles, including much of this part of the San Gabriel Valley, are served by Southern California Edison instead, so we confirm the current offer for your address before quoting it.
The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit applied to qualifying heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025, and it is not available for installations after that date.
On the gas side, South Coast AQMD Rule 1111 limits NOx emissions from fan-type central furnaces sold and installed in the region and has been amended toward zero-emission requirements. That direction is one reason homeowners planning ahead often look at heat pumps now. The district sets and revises compliance dates, so we check the current version when you are comparing options.
Living with a heat pump
Heat pumps deliver steadier, gentler warmth than a gas furnace. Supply air feels warm rather than hot, and the system runs longer cycles at lower output. On cold, damp mornings the outdoor unit will occasionally run a defrost cycle and may release a little steam; that is normal. Filters still matter, especially during wildfire smoke events, and we show you where yours is and how often to check it.
After installation we test heating and cooling modes, measure airflow and walk you through the thermostat. Homeowners in San Gabriel, San Marino, Monterey Park, Rosemead and South Pasadena can expect the same process.
